The GORSLINE FAMILY TREE by Bob Gorsline has its own page on this website. It is an extensive Genealogy of the descendants of Jacob Gosselin 1758-1722 with a focus on those who remained in New York State and adopted the "Gorsline" spelling of the surname. Below are summaries by Bob of the changes made to each update.
1 May 2023 Version:
- I have re-numbered the people from #53 to #82. I originally found #53 and #55 at Frank Doherty’s Beekman Patent, but recently I discovered that #53 Hannah, born Dec. 1st 1769, who married Peter Aldrich wasn’t even a Gorsline! but from a completely different family, and #57 seems to be an unsubstantiated guess by him as I have found nothing to corroborate it. I have added Richard L. to #34’s family, and have also added small bits of information or more accurate dates to others, as well as adding a bit more information concerning #26 Samuel, and #28 William.
- On page 4, #26 Samuel, I no longer find it credible that he married a Tabitha Calkins. The source of this appears to be Frank Doherty in his Beekman Patent where he quotes from a source: "Mr. [blank] Goslin married Tabitha Calkins, born 1772 in Oblong..." He then jumps to a speculation that this could be the said Samuel above. I no longer find this credible at all. Looking at the 1800 and 1810 census for Samuel, then in Greenbush, Rensselaer Co. N.Y., Tabitha would be age 28 in 1800 and age 38 in 1810. Neither of these spaces, covering almost 20 years, ages 26-45 is filled with any woman on either census. The woman who is with Samuel on the 1800 and 1810 census is a woman close to his own age - 45+ in both cases, in 1810 he would be aged 59, she would be aged 55+. I believe he was with the same woman all his life and it was not Tabitha Calkins, whoever else it may have been. A more likely person [married to Tabitha Calkins] living in this same area would be Samuel's younger brother, James, roughly 12 years younger than Samuel.
- I also deleted two people I previously had on page 8 for the same reason, # 55 and #57, in that I no longer found them credible, and will leave it at that.
- I also found a family on the 1840 Rochester, Ulster Co. census for my #124 Joseph on page 16. There are no names except the family head on the 1840 census, but at least now he has a wife, a son and a daughter, whoever they may be.
- I have also been able to add some families and stories which weren't in my previous version. I added extensively to #13 William and his son #39 Daniel. I was able to use one of my 'orphan families' as a possible solution to the questions involved. It takes up most of pages 5 and 6, and ends quite sadly, but I really enjoyed the search...
- I discovered at Family Search some land transactions and censuses involving Eseck Sprague Gorsline. Both in the 1942 Gorsline Family Chart by Samuel Gilbert Gorsline, and echoed in Lyle, is a list of children of Jose, born 1767, youngest son of #9 Samuel, and Jose's wife Peddie Gilbert. In this list are two names Ezekiel and Sprague. It turns out that they are the same person, born 1804 in Vermont, as were his younger brothers, James L. born 1808, and Gilbert O. born 1810, both also in Vermont. In the Family Search - Family Tree section he was sitting all by himself unattached to any family, so I was able to finish the task and join him up with his parents and siblings, which was rather a nice ending to that.
- In my own family, starting on page 12, #79 - who used to fill the empty space at #76 - I was able to find a son, James Munroe Gorsline. On the 1942 Gorsline Family Chart besides this James is typed Scranton PA. and sure enough that is exactly where I found him. His oldest brother #71 Daniel named a son of his James Munroe, and so the name ran in the family.
- The one son in this family I have not been able to find is apparently named Abram, but while looking for him I came across a whole story I had never seen anything about before. On page 24 - #226 Abram tells the story of Abram Gorsline, but I have been able to add a first wife Olive Paton and their son Miles, that didn't seem to exist in any telling of Abram's life. I really enjoyed researching this story, even if part of it ends sadly, as in the 1800's there is quite a bit more information on people than you can find in the 1700's...
- I discovered two children I had written down that belong to #129 Samuel and his wife Sarah Burger on page 26, but as my space was non-existent, and I didn't want to once again begin expanding my pages, I squeezed them both into one line: Harriet Gorsline died 3 May 1849, age 27, born 1822, tuberculosis; and Charles Gorsline, died 1 July 1849, age 21, born 1828, carpenter, cholera. Both found in Ulster County death indexes for 1849.
