RICHARD L. GORSLINE - by Bob Gorsline

This is a document made by Bob Gorsline about Richard L. Gorsline and some of that man's close relatives. It relates to Richard L. Gorsline (~1790s-1825), probably son of Jose Gosline (1767-1838), son of Samuel Gorsline (1723-1782), son of Josse Gorsline (1701-1772), who was the son of immigrant Jacob Gosselin (1658-1722).

Summary of updates to GORSLINE FAMILY TREE by Bob Gorsline

The GORSLINE FAMILY TREE by Bob Gorsline has its own page on this website. It is an extensive Genealogy of the descendants of Jacob Gosselin 1758-1722 with a focus on those who remained in New York State and adopted the "Gorsline" spelling of the surname. Below are summaries by Bob of the changes made to each update.

1 May 2023 Version:

  • I have re-numbered the people from #53 to #82. I originally found #53 and #55 at Frank Doherty’s Beekman Patent, but recently I discovered that #53 Hannah, born Dec. 1st 1769, who married Peter Aldrich wasn’t even a Gorsline! but from a completely different family, and #57 seems to be an unsubstantiated guess by him as I have found nothing to corroborate it. I have added Richard L. to #34’s family, and have also added small bits of information or more accurate dates to others, as well as adding a bit more information concerning #26 Samuel, and #28 William.
9 Apr 2023 Version:
  • On page 4, #26 Samuel, I no longer find it credible that he married a Tabitha Calkins. The source of this appears to be Frank Doherty in his Beekman Patent where he quotes from a source: "Mr. [blank] Goslin married Tabitha Calkins, born 1772 in Oblong..." He then jumps to a speculation that this could be the said Samuel above. I no longer find this credible at all. Looking at the 1800 and 1810 census for Samuel, then in Greenbush, Rensselaer Co. N.Y., Tabitha would be age 28 in 1800 and age 38 in 1810. Neither of these spaces, covering almost 20 years, ages 26-45 is filled with any woman on either census. The woman who is with Samuel on the 1800 and 1810 census is a woman close to his own age - 45+ in both cases, in 1810 he would be aged 59, she would be aged 55+. I believe he was with the same woman all his life and it was not Tabitha Calkins, whoever else it may have been. A more likely person [married to Tabitha Calkins] living in this same area would be Samuel's younger brother, James, roughly 12 years younger than Samuel.
  • I also deleted two people I previously had on page 8 for the same reason, # 55 and #57, in that I no longer found them credible, and will leave it at that.
  • I also found a family on the 1840 Rochester, Ulster Co. census for my #124 Joseph on page 16. There are no names except the family head on the 1840 census, but at least now he has a wife, a son and a daughter, whoever they may be.
  • I have also been able to add some families and stories which weren't in my previous version. I added extensively to #13 William and his son #39 Daniel. I was able to use one of my 'orphan families' as a possible solution to the questions involved. It takes up most of pages 5 and 6, and ends quite sadly, but I really enjoyed the search...
  • I discovered at Family Search some land transactions and censuses involving Eseck Sprague Gorsline. Both in the 1942 Gorsline Family Chart by Samuel Gilbert Gorsline, and echoed in Lyle, is a list of children of Jose, born 1767, youngest son of #9 Samuel, and Jose's wife Peddie Gilbert. In this list are two names Ezekiel and Sprague. It turns out that they are the same person, born 1804 in Vermont, as were his younger brothers, James L. born 1808, and Gilbert O. born 1810, both also in Vermont. In the Family Search - Family Tree section he was sitting all by himself unattached to any family, so I was able to finish the task and join him up with his parents and siblings, which was rather a nice ending to that.
  • In my own family, starting on page 12, #79 - who used to fill the empty space at #76 - I was able to find a son, James Munroe Gorsline. On the 1942 Gorsline Family Chart besides this James is typed Scranton PA. and sure enough that is exactly where I found him. His oldest brother #71 Daniel named a son of his James Munroe, and so the name ran in the family.
  • The one son in this family I have not been able to find is apparently named Abram, but while looking for him I came across a whole story I had never seen anything about before. On page 24 - #226 Abram tells the story of Abram Gorsline, but I have been able to add a first wife Olive Paton and their son Miles, that didn't seem to exist in any telling of Abram's life. I really enjoyed researching this story, even if part of it ends sadly, as in the 1800's there is quite a bit more information on people than you can find in the 1700's...
  •  I discovered two children I had written down that belong to #129 Samuel and his wife Sarah Burger on page 26, but as my space was non-existent, and I didn't want to once again begin expanding my pages, I squeezed them both into one line: Harriet Gorsline died 3 May 1849, age 27, born 1822, tuberculosis; and Charles Gorsline, died 1 July 1849, age 21, born 1828, carpenter, cholera. Both found in Ulster County death indexes for 1849.

GORSLINE ORIGINS - by Bob Gorsline

This document was written by Bob Gorsline to summarize the history of how Jacob Gosselin, the immigrant, became connected as a son to Jacob Gosselin born 1627 in Amsterdam, and how newer records have been found that connect him to Adrian Gosselin in Normandy, France. This is the most up to date version.

JOSE GORSLINE (1767-1838) - by Bob Gorsline

This is information about Jose Gorsline, sent to me 9 Oct 2021 in an email sent from Bob Gorsline. It relates to Jose Gosline (1767-1838), son of Samuel Gorsline (1723-1782), son of Josse Gorsline (1701-1772), who was the son of immigrant Jacob Gosselin (1658-1722):

One other little narrative I have concerns Jose Gorsline born 1767 died 1838, (my #34 on page 5, Lyle's #18). It's only two pages long but I find it quite interesting. In Lyle, under #18 Joseph (Jose), on page 26, he quotes from a letter he received concerning Jose and a quote from the 'History of Lycoming County'. Lyle (or Lyndon?), dismisses this narrative and concludes that some of the information "is likely incorrect as primary sources indicate otherwise". But, unfortunately he offers no proof of this assertion. It would certainly have been helpful to have seen these primary sources he refers to, and I had no idea of the truth of the matter until, by chance, I came across a book by the Vermont Archaelogical Society published in 1992 and was able to untangle the story. Previously, having seen no primary sources on the truth of Jose Gorsline, I had come across Tom Leverich's "Individual Narrative of Martha Leverich [23] - wife of Samuel Gorsline". Their ninth child was Jose Gorsline of whom Tom Leverich says "mentioned in father's will, no further record."  He goes on to say that "Jose Gorsline is identified as the husband of Mary, 'Peddie' Gilbert". He then proceeds to quote from the 'History of Lycoming County' to disprove this assertion. However, thanks to coming across the publication by the Vermont Archaeological Society I was able to unravel the truth and discovered that Jose Gorsline did in fact marry Pedda Gilbert (her name was never Mary), and he was the son-in-law of Job Gilbert, and that the story in 'The History of Lycoming County', published 1892, was actually a completely garbled account of the life of Jose's father-in-law Job. Whoever had written the History of Lycoming County had completely mixed up the two men. Sometimes it takes a bit of both work and luck to untangle these old families.

Below is the Document he attached to that email.

JACOB GOSSELIN (1658-before 1722): MARRIAGES AND PARENTS - by Sarah and Sherrie Goaslind

This document, written by Sarah Goaslind and Sherrie Goaslind, discusses evidence for Jacob Gosselin's (b. 1658) marriage to first Marie Madeleine Bailleau (b. 1664) and later to Judith L'esveille (b.1663); it also explores the likelihood of Adrien Gosselin (b. 1630) and Marie Fuoquesolle (b. 1630) as his parents rather than Jacob Gosselin (b. 1627) and Sara Gorris (b. 1634).

Jacob Gosselin's Baptismal Record

Jacob Gosselin's 1658 Baptismal record:

The original document can be seen by clicking this link to Amiens Baptisms and then entering page number 136 in the top navigation box.

A transcription and translation of the above:

Jacob son of Adrian Gosselin and of Marie Foucsole was born the first of October 1659 and was baptized by Sir Pinette pastor the sixth of July and presented by Jacob Honore and Barbe Prenor.

Since Jacob was baptized in July 1659, the birth date recorded as the first of October 1659 must be in error, and he was most likely born in 1 Oct 1658.
